Truecaller has launched Scam Checker, a free website that lets people check whether a phone number, link or message is associated with a scam. The tool does not require an app download or an account login. It draws on Truecaller's existing database and reports submitted by users through its ScamFeed platform.
India is the first market for the service, with launches in other regions planned later, according to Shifter. The company says it has more than 500 million users worldwide. Truecaller is expanding its fraud-protection tools beyond caller identification as suspicious activity increasingly reaches people through messaging apps and web links.
Truecaller was founded in Stockholm by Alan Mamedi and Nami Zarringhalam. Scam Checker makes the company's scam data accessible on the web to people who want to examine a specific number, message or link before responding to it.
